Under the leadership of Major General William Rosecrans, the Army of the Cumberland clashed with the Confederate Army of Tennessee led by General Braxton Bragg.

Attempting to reclaim Chattanooga, Bragg sought to engage a segment of Rosecrans' army in order to secure the city once more. However, his plans were disrupted when encountering the Union army on their way north.
